With one year of blogging just barely behind me, and my new bloggy make-over, I’ve been doing a lot of blog contemplation: What am I doing with this blog? What do I want to do with it? Why do I enjoy it so much? Etc.
Well, I haven’t come to any grand conclusions, but I have been looking at the world through blog-colored glasses the past couple of days. Take the dreaded Wal-Marts, for example. Instead of walking with my head down and avoiding eye contact with everybody, I find myself wandering around, wondering how many of my fellow Wal-Mart goers are also Bloggers. Maybe that lady with the cart full of clothes is doing a paid review of the new JMS line. Maybe the Mom ahead of me in the candy aisle is also a fan of Bakerella and is stocking up on Pop Supplies just like me. Maybe we’re all more connected than we know.
Reading other Mommy blogs has certainly helped ease my fears about going out with both my small girls – yes, there are going to be meltdowns and juggling and struggles, but there are SO MANY WOMEN out there going through the exact same thing. People still might look, and they might even get annoyed, but there are a lot of people out there who totally understand and get what I’m dealing with. They might even go home and blog about it. Why is that? We’re so helpful and friendly on the Interwebs, but we still maintain our stand-off-ishness in the real world? I’m trying to be less like that. I try to actually smile at people now. Crazy, huh? On that note, I have discovered that if you have small children and look the least bit approachable, old people tend to flock to you. Seriously. At the library, the drug store, Wal-Mart…since I’ve started making an effort to relax and enjoy being out with the girls I’ve had so many older people stop to smile at the girls and talk baby stats with me. It’s very sweet! And when I smile at the other tired-looking Moms, 9 times out of 10 I get a tired little knowing smile back. Who knew?
So I guess what I’m trying to say is that part of what I love about this blogging stuff is that it’s helping me get out of my shell a bit more; it’s giving me a better appreciation for what the people around me are probably going through; it’s making me feel a bit more empowered as I continue to settle into this role as Momma. Thanks for that, Bloggy Buddies!
Just keep smiling!
Becki
P.S. – After growing my hair out for over a year, I went ahead and chopped it off again. It is a Mommy cut? Maybe. But it just feels like ME!

I love the new cut! It doesn’t look like a ‘mommy cut’ at all, it looks very hip and sexay.
I think it is the rare mother who hasn’t been in the exact same situation when your toddler melts down or your infant has a craptastrophe in the middle of the mall…and honestly, its too easy to get housebound when they’re small. I’m glad you’re getting out and interacting and finding it all easier. Its a strange path, this mommy thing, but we all start out with the same lack of knowledge and every moment we travel along it we gain more wisdom, more love, more insight. I don’t regret a step of it so far.
LOL, thanks for the hair love, Maven!
Such a nice post Becki! Glad that you are starting to *come of age* so to speak and spread your wings a little bit more. I have met some of the most wonderful, talented and giving people through blogging and through twitter and I’d hate to think of what my days would be like without those brief but cherished contacts with them. I include you amongst them 🙂
P.S. I forgot to tell you how nice I think your hair-cut is. Looks great on you, hope you enjoy your new length 😉
You are always so kind, Paula. Thank you, on all counts. 🙂
Ok so I totally forgot to tell you what camera Scott got me! Sorry. I’m not cool enough to know how to put links in my comments so here’s the camera and you’ll just have to copy and paste!

It’s by no means professional but I’m a point and shoot kind of girl and it will work great for me!
I love you post by the way, I totally agree, we should be more blog-like in real life!
Dang girl, my DSLR is only 10.2 megapixels. That’s a fuh-HINE (FIIINE) point and shoot you got there! Point n shoots are way better for taking on crazy spring bath adventures, too. 😉
Oh look it made itself into a link!
